The Certificate in Maritime Law Essentials offers a practical, business-focused introduction to the legal frameworks governing the movement of cargo by sea, with a strong emphasis on the perspective of shippers, cargo owners, and beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) operating in both containerised and general cargo – dry bulk trades.

The course is designed for professionals responsible for buying, selling, moving, insuring, or managing cargo, who need a clear understanding of how maritime law affects contracts, liabilities, claims, and commercial decision-making. It is particularly relevant to shippers, traders, logistics and supply chain professionals, as well as those working in insurance, chartering, ports, and shipping services.

Rather than approaching maritime law solely from a shipowner’s standpoint, the programme focuses on the legal risks and protections that matter most to cargo interests—including contractual exposure, cargo claims, delay, damage, loss, and the allocation of responsibility between carriers, charterers, terminals, and insurers.

Key topics include carriage of goods by sea, bills of lading, charterparties (from a cargo and charterer perspective), general average, marine insurance, and maritime claims. Particular attention is given to the practical application of international conventions such as the Hague-Visby Rules, and how these rules impact cargo rights, defences, and recoveries in real trading situations.

Delivered through real-world examples, case studies, and interactive discussions, the course enables participants to understand how maritime law operates in practice, assess legal and commercial risks, manage disputes more effectively, and engage with carriers, insurers, and legal advisers with greater confidence.
